| Rober Cornelius Mullane '63 It is a sad duty to report
the tragic and untimely death of our Brother Robert Cornelius Mullane 1963. Bob came to
Amherst from White Plains, New York in the fall of 1961 to be a Gordon King student of
Arboriculture. His father was a retired police officer and Bob displayed an inherited self
confidence. Bob was a boisterous Pledge and was elected President of ATG. He ran our
Active Chapter (AC) well and published fine LINKs. He started what soon became our
financial Building Fund to save for a new Chapter House. Bob joined the Board of ATG, Inc.
on October 24, 1964 commuting for meetings from Hawthorne, New York. He was elected
President on November 20, 1966. He served two turmultuous years to Homecoming 1968 and an
additional year from 1969 to 1970. In his first term our AC required extra attention. In
his second term we purchased our first two investment properties at 387 and 401 North
Pleasant Street. Bob enjoyed returning to the Active Chapter for decades to attend alumni
functions at Homecoming or Pledge Formal and when he was to campus as a speaker on
arboriculture. He had a habit of pressing a couple of $100 bills into the hand of the
current AC president. He never forgot how difficult yet rewarding his tenure had been as
AC president. He knew that an AC president would use his gift properly. Bob was both a
strong financial and philosophical supporter of the 1982 founding of the.James U. Crockett
Agricultural Technology Growth Fund and served as one of the initial trustees and as the
first chairman. Bob was a main ATG building block and led our expansion to stability. He
helped develop our committment to improving agriculture in the northeast. His
contributions are evident. We are honored that he chose to be one of us and then to be one
of our leaders. We mourn his passing and pray for his family. Bob died Sunday afternoon at
age 59 in a blaze that destroyed his New Canaan, Conn. home. His wife, Patricia was at
work as a nurse. She returned to find the fire and other emergency vehicles around their
home. Their two grown sons, Michael and Shawn live in Denver, Colorado. His younger
brother Gary Richard Mullane 1969 also attended SSA and is a Brother of ATG still
practicing arboriculture from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was our Pledge Formal
speaker in 1997.- James Mulcahy '60 |
