| Katherine Leslie Powell died peacefully in her sleep on
May 4, 1998, only two months short of her 105th birthday. There is no doubt that until May
Katherine was the oldest living graduate of the Stockbridge School. We had already written
her up for News and Notes using information received last Christmas. She was in general
good health, eyesight good, but with some trouble hearing. She still knitted and was able
to get around by herself. The volunteers who wrote said her mind was still sharp. She was
a good and faithful pen pal of ours for about 20 years as she was with many friends.
Although she lived in the retirement home for over 30 years, she was by no means retired.
She was active in her religion and instrumental in establishing a church sponsored camp,
Farthest Out, traveling all over the country on its behalf. She was also active in
founding the worldwide healing organization, the International Order of St. Luke, the
Physician. The Episcopal priest ended the memorial service with well known, true words for
Katherine, "Well done thou good and faithful servant!" |
